Working Together to Stay Safe

Safety in the COVID-19 Environment

The nation’s education system – and the transportation services that support it – are vital to the infrastructure of our society. Students depend on a safe and reliable ride to and from school, and families depend on the work/life balance provided by this structure.

Student Transportation of America and our entire Family of Companies is dedicated to the health and safety of our employees, passengers, and customers, while remaining committed to ensuring that we can transport the more than 1.25 Million students who depend on us to safely get to and from school.

The Year Ahead

We understand the importance of having a roadmap in place for the reopening of schools across North America. To address these challenges, we assembled the STA Task Force to identify, address, and implement changes to all areas of our services that have been and may continue to be impacted by the precautionary measures necessary to “flatten the curve” of COVID-19.

The scope of work outlined by the STA Task Force has been at the forefront of our planning for the 2020-2021 school year, and will continue to help guide the policies, procedures, and safety protocols that we put in place to ensure that the concerns and expectations of all stakeholders are met or exceeded. While we expect the plan to evolve and adapt over time, we are fully prepared to safely re-start school transportation services with thoughtful strategies to:

>> Put in place the equipment, resources, and policies needed to protect our employees, passengers, customers, and the communities we serve.

>> Deploy communication tools and training curriculums to ensure all employees are fully educated and prepared to return to work safely.

>> Involve employees across functions and levels, unions, customers and school boards, parents, and community leaders in phases of planning and execution.

Preparing Our Teams

The STA Task Force is actively monitoring and respectfully following the safety guidelines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as well as other federal, state, and local governing bodies, in addition to working closely with our customers to ensure their specific needs are met.

Guidance from this approach has framed the policies, procedures, and protocols that we are now implementing to protect the health of our workforce and customers.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: PPE is being provided to all employees at no cost, including 3-ply reusable and disposable masks, face shields, and gloves.

>> Drivers and monitors will wear face coverings at all times on duty where practical, while operating a vehicle, and when interacting with others.
>> Gloves are available to drivers upon request.
>> Should the local school district require stricter guidelines, we are prepared to adhere to those guidance standards.

CLEANING & DISINFECTION: The best position to take in response to COVID-19 is a proactive one, and adherence to a clear set of safety standards may be one of the best defenses towards protecting the safety of our workforce, customers, and communities.

EPA-registered household disinfectants including ready-to-use sprays, concentrates, pump sprayers, and wipes are being provided to all of our operating facilities across North America.

>> All vehicles will be cleaned in accordance with applicable federal, state, local, and district guidelines.
>> Every vehicle will be cleaned regularly, including the driver compartment and all high-touch surfaces using cleaning materials approved by the CDC and EPA.
>> In the event of a bus swap, we will clean the driver’s compartment and all high-touch surfaces before the vehicle is put into use.

TRAINING & COMMUNICATION: Initial and ongoing safety training are pivotal for the type of work that we perform daily. In addition to implementing new technology platforms and telecommunication strategies to facilitate virtual classroom and certification training for our drivers, all employees are provided with additional instruction that includes:

>> Proper use of PPE
>> Hygiene and housekeeping measures
>> Social distancing and isolation practices
>> Assessing for COVID-19 related signs and symptoms
>> Exposure/illness reporting procedures

Preparing Our Passengers

The safety and protective measures needed to slow the spread of COVID-19 have taken an unprecedented toll on the nation’s education system and the transportation services that support it.

The STA Family of Companies is dedicated to the health and safety of our employees, passengers, and customers, while remaining committed to providing the level of safety and service for which our company is known. A critical component of school bus safety in the COVID-19 environment is making sure that our passengers and their families feel secure in our care, and are informed of the steps we are taking to preserve every passenger's safety.
